Celtic January target Illan Meslier is officially on the market after Leeds United’s decision

Now that Martin O’Neill has been confirmed, the real business can start at Celtic.

From incomings to outgoings, it’s going to be a crazy summer for Celtic, on top of having to deal with the fact that there is a World Cup taking place in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.

One area up for debate is the goalkeeping department and whether it requires an injection of fresh blood.

Kasper Schmeichel has retired, and another keeper needs to come in, but Viljami Sinisalo has done well in his absence, so do Celtic need another number one or back-up keeper?

Either way, back in the winter, Illan Meslier was linked with Celtic, and now he has officially been let go by Leeds United.

Should Viljami Sinisalo be the long-term replacement for Kasper Schmeichel?

Even though Meslier played 215 games for Leeds United, including helping them to promotion, he was completely frozen out during the recent campaign.

The 26-year-old didn’t play a single minute; that’s why those Celtic links emerged in the winter.

On Wednesday, with the domestic campaign now over and the summer transfer set to re-open, Leeds posted a heartfelt message to their departing keeper.

‘𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗬𝗼𝘂, 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻,’ wrote Leeds’ official social media account.

‘Leeds United can confirm that Illan Meslier will leave this summer upon the expiration of his contract. Everyone at the club thanks Illan for his service and wishes him all the best for the future.’

Meslier isn’t the answer for Celtic

Perhaps several seasons ago, there were big expectations on Meslier’s shoulders, and many felt he could go right to the top.

But this recent campaign has to be seen as a decline, and it’s not what Celtic need right now.

Plus, if the Frenchman were to secure a move to the champions of Scotland, he would want to be the number one keeper.

And in truth, if you compare him and Sinisalo, then there is only one winner.
