Celtic-linked Siriki Dembele won't sign new Peterborough contract

Reported Celtic summer target Siriki Dembele won’t be signing a new contract with Peterborough United.

Back in March, Celtic were said to be looking at a potential summer move for the young attacker [Give Me Sport]. However, Peterborough refused to budge and he remained with the Championship club despite being in the final year of his contract.

In recent months, it’s been said that Dembele wants to move up to Scotland [Peterborough Telegraph]. With Celtic said to have been interested in the past, that means he could be nabbed for nothing next summer.

And Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has confirmed that their hopes of hanging onto the player beyond this season are dead in the water.

Speaking via his Hard Truth Podcast, MacAnthony said: “Siriki’s agents were stalking me for a couple of days, including right up the end of the transfer window, asking me if I’d accept certain fees, but there was never enough money involved. I was verbally turning down £2.5 million offers for Siriki before he’d scored twice in two Championship matches this season so there was never any chance I’d accept less.

“He’s not going to sign a new deal so the best thing for Siriki to do now is to get fit, make himself available for training, get in the team and show what he can do. He’s already shown it in glimpses, but before the West Brom game he wasn’t fit enough to train on the Thursday so my gaffer was never likely to pick him.

“I’d have thought a game live on the television would have been ideal for him to get noticed. Instead he played for half an hour. If he gets going and scores 8-10 goals before January maybe someone will still pay £3 million for him in the next window. That could happen even with just six months left on a contract.”

Celtic could nab Siriki Dembele on cut-price £3m deal

If Celtic want to go for this, there’s a talented Championship forward available on a cut-price deal in January.

Dembele has 27 goals to his name with Posh, with 12 goals and 12 assists bagged last season alone. This term, meanwhile, he already has two goals in four games [Transfermarkt]. The brother of Celtic starlet Karamoko is showing no signs of slowing down.

Celtic will look at their attacking ranks and question whether there’s a gap there. The answer, however, is yes. Patryk Klimala, Odsonne Edouard, and Leigh Griffiths have all left from last season’s contingent. We brought Kyogo Furuhashi and Giorgos Giakoumakis in to replace them. That leaves one that still hasn’t been replaced.

As things stand, Albian Ajeti is the club’s third choice striker. As much as the Swiss will be itching for an opportunity this season, we should have a better reserve option in place.

Celtic will undoubtedly be analysing their squad endlessly between now and January. It’s a vital window for tweaks and could determine whether the season is a success or not. If we find ourselves in need of an option, we know Dembele is there and waiting to be nabbed.

But whilst the fact is it’s a positive that he won’t be signing a new deal, it’s likely to lead to substantially increased interest in the player come the new year. Let’s see if Celtic still hold some of their own.
