Celtic are showing interest in Algerian international defender Ahmed Touba, FootMercato has reported this weekend.

The outlet believes a number of top European sides are tracking his progress this summer including potential Champions League opponents such as Bayer Leverkusen, Sevilla and Benfica.

The French-born 24-year-old is an international with Algeria and has won five caps to date, two of which have come this month against Uganda and Tanzania in ACoN qualification.

Touba came through the Club Brugge academy but made the switch to Eredivisie in 2020 and has gone on to make 62 appearances in all competitions for RKC Waalwijk.

Described as “quick, lively and solid”, he could find himself on the move to a much bigger club this summer, whether it’s at Celtic or elsewhere.

The Bhoys recently signed Cameron Carter-Vickers on a four-year deal but are thought to be in the market for another central defender to compete with the American international, Carl Starfelt and Stephen Welsh.

Christopher Jullien is also part of the Celtic squad but has made it clear he’s seeking regular week-to-week football next season even if it doesn’t come in Glasgow.

It’s unclear what kind of fee Touba would be available for, but his contract does expire in 2023 according to Transfermarkt, so Waalwijk aren’t holding a strong hand of cards.

Touba is at least another name to add to the pile over the coming weeks, as Ange Postecoglou builds a squad capable of competing in all four competitions next term!

In other news, Celtic could still make at least 6 signings after Cameron Carter-Vickers deal.
