Celtic are one of the teams interested in international striker Jorge Benguche, Honduran outlet La Prensa reports this week.
With Neil Lennon and his recruitment team preparing for a push towards a tenth successive title, it’s likely manoeuvres will be made in the transfer market over the coming months even if on a reduced scale compared to previous years because of the ongoing health crisis.
A long list of names will be mentioned in the media along the way and Benguche has popped up in a paper local to his current club Olimpia.
It’s said by La Prensa that, alongside Celtic, Italian club Cagliari, Portuguese outfit Belenenses and a number of Major League Soccer teams are interested.
It’s against MLS sides that Benguche’s reputation has recently been boosted, playing against Seattle Sounders and Montreal Impact in the CONCACAF Champions League prior to the outbreak of the global pandemic.
Against the Washington state side he contributed an assist and scored in a penalty shoot-out to help his team through to the quarter-finals stage where he netted in a 2-1 victory away to the Canadians.
That goal, added to the two he managed in the CONCACAF League (Transfermarkt) and the 17 he’s scored in the various stages of the 2019/20 Honduran top-flight (Soccerway) means he had a total tally of 20 goals at club level before football was suspended in March.
That’s not a bad return and it’s form that led him to gain three caps at international level with Honduras over the last year, resulting in two goals scored (Transfermarkt).
Honduran legend Gilberto Yearwood said of the player to La Prensa: “He has a good physique, he knows how to handle the ball and above all he gets to the penalty area well, a classic 9 on the field.
“These are very positive qualities for a footballer who wants to play in Europe. He shouldn’t have any fear. He simply needs to demonstrate all the qualities he has on the pitch. I have no doubt he will play in Europe.”
Ultimately with Odsonne Edouard installed and players such as Leigh Griffitths & Patryk Klimala in support, Celtic are well-stocked in the striking area right now.
However, with Lennon opting for a 2-man attack on a regular basis earlier this year, could we do with another challenger beyond Vakoun Bayo in the Hoops squad?
Benguche might be a name worth keeping an eye on over the coming weeks and months, if so.
