Watching Celtic struggle to score goals in the 2-0 loss to Livingston on Sunday, it really hit home that Celtic could do with another striker to help Odsonne Edouard.
Vakoun Issouf Bayo has done decent enough for the Hoops, but so far he has not looked like the type of player who will score around 15 to 20 goals a season.
As for Leigh Griffiths, he has been out for a while with various injuries and there is no date set to his return to first-team action.
New striker would take pressure off Edouard
Therefore, the Hoops perhaps need anther striker, even in the short-term, to take the pressure off Edouard. To do that though, they would need to sign a free agent.
There is one striker who is currently a free agent, but that could be ending very soon. It also a player that Neil Lennon is very familiar with – Gary Hooper.
Hooper has been without a club after leaving Sheffield Wednesday in the summer. The Hoops were linked with a move for the player back in May.
However, reports from Isport in Iran claim that he is close to joining Esteghlal. Should that be the case, it could go down as a missed opportunity for the Hoops.
Do well on a short-term deal
Hooper could have done a job for the Bhoys, even on a short-term deal. Celtic didn’t sign a striker in the summer, and that could be a mistake in retrospect. The goals have dried up in the last two league games.
Hooper would have been an ideal option to bring off the bench to try to get the three points against Hibs and Livingston.
Bayo, when he came on in both games, didn’t really look like finding the back of the net. Some might say that bringing Hooper back to the club would have been a backwards step. However, with the Hoops going for nine in a row, fans would welcome back any player who can help the Hoops clinch the title.
