Celtic potentially signing Freddie Woodman isn't going down well with Newcastle fans
The idea of Celtic potentially signing Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman isn’t something that’s pleased the Toon support.
Newcastle-based outlet The Chronicle reported this week that Celtic are keen on the English shot-stopper. The report claims both Celtic and Southampton are interested, with Woodman just completing an impressive season with Seansea City.
The Toon goalkeeper managed to make an incredible 52 appearances for the Welsh side, keeping 22 clean sheets in the process [Transfermarkt]. It’s a fine return from the 24-year-old, who stated after their playoff final defeat to Brentford that he wants to play for Swansea again [Swansea City website].
A reported fee hasn’t been mentioned for him. However, he’s under contract with Newcastle until the summer of 2023. That allows the Premier League club to get maximum value for his services. Especially after such an impressive season in the Championship.
This isn’t the first time Celtic have been linked with a move for Woodman either. Back in 2018, Brendan Rodgers was linked with an interest after sending a scout to watch him in action for the under-23s [Chronicle].
Celtic signing Freddie Woodman from Newcastle? Looks a long shot
It’s clear given his increasing reputation that Woodman wouldn’t be available on the cheap. Chances are Newcastle would be able to ask as much as eight figures for his services given the year he’s just had. He’s also rated highly by their supporters, which doesn’t help our own cause.
Celtic have three goalkeepers at the club. You have to imagine that in order for us to bring one in, we need to shift one or two on. Scott Bain has proven that he isn’t good enough on more than one occasion this season. Question marks remain over Vasilis Barkas, whilst Conor Hazard still doesn’t appear ready.
And we haven’t even mentioned the elephant in the room yet. We still don’t have a manager. Goalkeeper is too important a position for Celtic to make decisions on without a new man in the hotseat. The best-case scenario for us is that reports are carried out on him for the next manager to peruse.
Even then, with the length of time we’re taking to get him in, this could be another target we miss out on due to our managerial dallying.
Even so, the prospect of Celtic taking the English stopper hasn’t gone down well with Newcastle fans. Take a look at some of their reaction below:
I dont like it. Big mistake to sell him…

If we let Woodman go, we'll regret it.

No, he’s a future England number 1, don’t make the same mistakes again

Pickford went to Everton for £25m rising to £30m so Woodman has to be worth £20m at least. I’d rather keep Woodman and loan him out than sell him and have another Toney, Mbabu, Armstrong situation.

Nope, he needs to be in the squad now and push dubs for a place, he’s our future no.1 it’s just a matter of how quickly he makes that transition, selling him is just more of the same stagnating & terrible running of NUFC. pic.twitter.com/YLi5ObnpDR

we should get something in between £15-20M otherwise it’s a crime to let him go!

No, madness to sell the kid utter madness, we’ve invested 10 years or so in developing him to the point where he’s the outstanding Gk prospect in the country & if he goes how much of the money will #nufc see? History says little if any so what’s the point?

Selling Woodman is another bad mistake, he’s future England in my opinion. He should be no 2.

Lord now that would be idiotic
