Celtic are preparing a move for Newcastle and Scotland winger Ryan Fraser, The Northern Echo has reported this afternoon.
Fraser is surplus to requirements on Tyneside and hasn’t featured for Eddie Howe‘s men in the English top-flight since October 2022.
He has made just 59 appearances for Newcastle since he signed as a free agent in 2020 [Sky Sports], scoring three goals and creating six assists. The winger also has 25 caps for Scotland.
The 29-year-old also didn’t feature in any of Newcastle’s pre-season preparations. Fraser was hampered with a hamstring injury that put him out for much of last season but according to the report, he has been left to train with the Newcastle reserves.
Fraser is contracted to The Magpies until 2025 but the report also claims that the EPL club will not be looking for a ‘significant fee’ for him and they are simply keen to remove him from the wage bill.
His salary isn’t known but being at one of the top clubs in the English Premier League, he won’t come cheap and unless Brendan Rodgers is willing to break the bank to get him, he will need to take a significant wage cut if he fancies the move to Glasgow.
Celtic have been looking for a replacement for their former Portuguese star, Jota, ever since he made the summer switch to the Saudi League.
The capture of Hyunjun Yang shows early promise but it does seem that the Celtic manager is keen to add another attacker to his ranks before the summer transfer window closes.
With just over two weeks left to go in the transfer window, it does look like Rodgers is moving forward in his plans to add to the current Celtic squad and it seems that Fraser is one that has caught his eye.
