Celtic have reportedly agreed a deal for Hapoel Be’er Sheva’s Hatem Abd Elhamed. Israeli newspaper SportsWalla reports that a deal has been agreed between the clubs. The fee is believed to be €2 million – which is around £1.8 million.
The most interesting thing about the potential signing is where Elhamed plays. Primarily he is a centre-back. Although he has played right-back occasionally.
Majority of appearances at centre-back
However, when you look at his performances last season, of his 27 appearances for Be’er Sheva 20 were at centre-back. Only four were at right-back.
Therefore, you have to imagine that he has been signed as a centre-back. This looks to be the case when you consider that the Hoops are reportedly taking right-back Danny Simpson on trial next week.
Hoops still need a right-back
Perhaps Neil Lennon will employ Elhamed at right-back on a temporary basis. That shouldn’t take away from the fact that the team desperately need a right-back, though.
With the signing deadline for the next round of the Champions League on Thursday night, it will be interesting to see how many deals the Hoops try to get done in that time.
Should Elhamed sign, it will be the fourth purchase of the summer by the Hoops. You can’t accuse the club of resting on their laurels this summer at least. Signings have been made regularly. However, it looks like the search for a proper right-back will go on.
