Celtic's unlikely transfer link to Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard

Celtic are looking into the possibility of signing Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard, TEAMtalk have reported today.

The outlet cites sources suggesting that both the Bhoys and rivals Rangers are keen on the idea, as the Red Devils figure out what to do with the out-of-favour England international.

He’s yet to make an appearance in the English Premier League or the UEFA Champions League this term, with his action limited to the EFL Cup.

His contract is set to expire at the end of the season, but TEAMtalk reports that the Old Trafford side do hold a year’s extension option.

The website states that Lingard is open to fighting for his place in the United squad, but needs to know their plans for him over the next month so he can potentially seek a move elsewhere.

Celtic’s interest seems unlikely to pan out given the wages that Lingard will be used to, as well as the number of clubs that will likely be chasing his signature.

Although the last couple of years haven’t exactly gone to plan for him, his natural ability and profile will ensure that a cash-rich side somewhere in Europe will no doubt give him a chance to resurrect his career.

His market value still holds at £12.6m, according to Transfermarkt.

All of that, for me, rules out any Scottish Premiership move whether at Celtic Park or Ibrox.

Neil Lennon does need a new wide player though. Options on the flanks are limited at the moment with James Forrest and Mikey Johnston still on the sidelines.

Mohamed Elyounoussi has also recently picked up a knock, bringing to the fore our lack of attacking depth.

Whether it’s Lingard or a more realistic target, it’s an area of the team that Celtic need to prioritise in January.

Time will tell whether we have our recruitment plans in order or not.
