Celtic may face some extra competition for the signature of Xaver Schlager.

RB Leipzig confirmed that Schlager will be leaving after three years at the club.

The Hoops are in need of a refresh after their midfield has become too one-dimensional over the years.

Schlager would be a big upgrade in that position to help Callum McGregor out, even if his wages may be a potential stumbling block.

Other European clubs will be sniffing around the Austrian international, and one Champions League club has been told to make a move for him.

You must drop one midfielder so that Xaver Schlager can play for Celtic…

Bayern Munich encouraged to sign Xaver Schlager by Lothar Matthaus

Vincent Kompany will be losing Leon Goretzka this summer and shall want to find a replacement to keep his options varied at Bayern Munich.

They are currently leading the Bundesliga table at a canter and are expected to be in the mix for the Champions League.

Lothar Matthaus thinks that Schlager would be a perfect fit for Bayern and a better option than joining Celtic.

He told Bild: “He’s a free agent, has international experience, and has known the Bundesliga for years. And in Leipzig, he’s not just responsible for the physical aspects of the game, but also contributes to the team’s attacking play. Schlager is like Laimer’s twin on the pitch. He is just as tenacious and strong in tackles.”

Xaver Schlager should pick Celtic over Bayern Munich

At the age of 28, Schlager realistically has one big move left in his career, so it would be understandable why the bright lights of Bayern Munich would appeal to him.

Celtic are one of the biggest clubs in the world though and would guarantee regular minutes.

Playing in European competitions wouldn’t become a distant memory and would continue to guarantee his spot in Austria’s national team.

At Bayern he would just be another piece in the jigsaw, whereas at Celtic, he would be front and centre.
