Chris Sutton thinks Celtic have made the signing of the summer in Scotland despite fan backlash

It’s going to be interesting to see how Celtic’s new signings perform over the course of the season.

A fair few arrived after Celtic’s abject goalless draw at Rangers, and how the board went about it all during the 2025 summer transfer window hasn’t sat well with the fans.

One huge critic has been Chris Sutton, and he hasn’t been afraid to call out the powers that be at Celtic for how they have gone about their business.

But there is one deal conducted by Celtic this summer that he ranks above them all.

Chris Sutton on Benjamin Nygren being the signing of the summer

Many thought Benjamin Nygren came in to compete on Celtic’s right flank after Nicolas Kuhn had joined Como in Italy.

But instead, Brendan Rodgers has deployed him as a number eight, apart from the Glasgow derby, and Sutton thinks he has ‘fitted in well.’

After being asked on the Warm-Up podcast who the signing of the summer is, Sutton made sure to put Nygren’s name forward.

“I think the obvious one, early days,” said Sutton. “You know me, I don’t like to get carried away. I am not that shallow. Nygren. He’s been good, hasn’t he?

“Well, I mean, he’s sort of fitted in well and scored a few goals. So, I would, yeah, say Benjamin Nygren.”

How Nygren has rated so far

Celtic’s club-record transfer Arne Engels was a regular in the middle of the park last season, alongside Reo Hatate and Callum McGregor.

But straight away, he was shunted to the bench and Nygren took his place as the number eight for the opening game of the new campaign.

Even going back to pre-season, Nygren was producing several strong displays, and that has continued during the opening month of the 2025/26 season, with Celtic sitting top of the league after four matches.
