Confirmed: Celtic Academy graduate Ewan Henderson moves to Hibernian
Ewan Henderson has been reunited with former Celtic Academy coach Shaun Maloney at Hibernian, on a loan-to-permanent basis.
Henderson’s contract expires with Celtic in the summer. Hibernian, therefore, have agreed to loan the Celtic Academy graduate until the summer. Upon the completion of his Hoops contract, he’ll start a new three-year contract with the Hibees [HFC].
Henderson had been hotly-tipped to break through at Celtic in years past. Under Brendan Rodgers, he impressed with a handful of first-team opportunities. However, under Neil Lennon, Henderson was somewhat forgotten. Ange Postecoglou used him in pre-season, but he only played once for the Greek-Aussie boss.
In his only appearance this season, he scored against Real Betis in the UEFA Europa League. However, Postecoglou has invested in the midfield this transfer window, leaving no real opportunity for the former Academy man.
Shaun Maloney, the new Hibs manager, expressed his delight at the transfer. He said [HFC]: “Ewan is an extremely talented player.
“He has superb awareness and vision, he’s creative and will provide assists.
“He’s a player I really want to help to develop so he can show the league the talent he has.
“As a Club, we look forward to helping Ewan develop so he can achieve his potential over the coming years.”
Farewell, Celtic Academy graduate Ewan Henderson; Hibs is an excellent choice for the youngster
It’s sad that it never worked out for Ewan Henderson at Celtic. In his limited opportunities, he showed flashes of quality. However, loan moves and sparse bench appearances indicated there was no real plan for the younger Henderson brother.
Ewan follows Liam, now at Serie A side Empoli, in leaving Celtic for Hibernian. The older Henderson famously won a Scottish Cup with the Hibees in 2016, overcoming Rangers in a dramatic final.
But with Reo Hatate and Yosukue Ideguchi strengthening the ranks at Celtic, it was obvious that something had to give. And Henderson, in fairness, was hardly likely to wait around for more opportunities. He could be an excellent addition by Shaun Maloney.
It’s been an interesting window for Maloney so far. He’s already brought in Bodø/Glimt youngster Elias Melkersen, although Celtic have been linked with right-winger and Aussie international Martin Boyle.
We wish Ewan Henderson the best of luck at Hibernian. There’s a player there, but it just never looked like truly happening for him at Celtic.
