Confirmed: Mat Ryan signs for Real Sociedad after Celtic links

Goalkeeper Mat Ryan has moved to Real Sociedad from Brighton & Hove Albion despite being linked to Celtic this summer.

The big Australian shot-stopper was touted for a move to the Bhoys last month to link up with former national team boss Ange Postecoglou.

However, it increasingly looks like Celtic will be persisting with Vasilis Barkas between the sticks.

Real Sociedad announced the news earlier tonight.

Ryan has spent time in La Liga before, playing for Valencia between 2015 and 2017.

This will be a disappointment to some Celtic fans who were hoping to see him arrive in Glasgow.

However, it’s not even clear if Postecoglou is in the market for a goalkeeper this summer. You’d think his sway would have brought Ryan to Scotland if we were truly interested in the player.

It could have been a case of putting two and two together on this one.

Nonetheless, goalkeepers continue to be a contentious issue for supporters. Barkas has a lot of proving himself to do in the opening stages of the season after a hugely disappointing 2020/21 campaign.

We’ll have to hope he can come good and show the kind of form that attracted Celtic to him in the first place.

In other news, Mikey Johnston is on the Celtic comeback trail.
