A recent comment by Neil Lennon could have inadvertently revealed a Celtic transfer target. The Hoops boss revealed, as reported by Football Scotland that he watched the midweek Champions League qualifier between PSV and Basel.

That would not be that interesting normally. The Hoops boss probably watches plenty of games. But a Basel player has recently been linked with the Hoops.

The Scottish Sun, citing the Daily Mail, reported that the Hoops had ‘ran checks’ on Basel right-back Silvan Widmer.

The right-back played the entirety of the game against PSV, which was won 3-2 by the Dutch side. Interestingly enough, the player’s agent was at Celtic Park to see the recent game against Nomme Kalju.

It might only be a coincidence, but Widmer could be the main reason that Lennon was watching Basel in action.

Hoops still in need of a right-back

The Hoops are still in need of a proper right-back despite the recent arrival of Hatem Abd Elhamed. Will Widmer be that player?

Celtic would need splash out a fair bit of cash to sign Widmer. He is under contract until 2022. Widmer also made 41 appearances for his team last season, and is a mainstay of the side.

Basel will not want to lose him. However, should Celtic offer enough money, then perhaps the deal could be done. Only time will if Celtic decide to move for Widmer. But he does look like he would be an excellent addition to the Hoops squad.
