Sky Sports pundit Davie Provan feels Celtic need to spend significantly in the January transfer window or risk missing out on a superb nine titles in a row, writing in his Scottish Sun column.
After losing to Rangers last week at Celtic Park, we head into the second half of the season knowing that it’s likely going to be a tough Scottish Premiership run-in.
Both Neil Lennon’s team and Steven Gerrard’s outfit have shown excellent consistency in the top-flight this season, compared to last term.
Neither side looks like dropping many points between now and May.
Provan now thinks that chief executive and the rest of the Hoops money men now need to loosen the purse strings and use the club’s wealth during this month’s transfer window.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “With cash burning a hole in Celts’ pocket, this is where the chief executive has to earn the zeros on his pay cheque. Not by bringing in more youngsters to be fattened for market, but by paying the going rate for time served players.
“Having allowed Celtic to become an irrelevance at Champions League level this Hoops board needs to up its game. For the first time in years there is a credible challenge to their dominance and to nine in a row.
“If Celts’ cash-rich board blows it now, they won’t be forgiven.”
A revolution isn’t needed
There is no doubt many fans want to see the club sign a few quality players this month. It is a transfer window after all. However, there isn’t an entire revolution needed in Lennon’s squad.
Although the derby result was tough to take, when taking the entire season into account, Celtic haven’t done too badly at all.
We’ve lifted the League Cup and we had our best ever group stage in a European competition. We’ve also improved on our league points total compared to this time last year.
If we can add a bit of quality and depth in attack and ensure we won’t be caught short in defence, we have a good enough squad and team to deliver on our ambitions this term.
