Ex-Hibs man casts doubt over Celtic January move for Kieron Bowie

Celtic’s striker search has entered yet another week of January.

After Martin O’Neill secured a 4-0 win on his return to the dugout on an interim basis, he maintained his stance that Celtic needed players in quickly.

It’s a third consecutive season in which the Hoops have been after a striker, after the departures of Kyogo Furuhashi and Adam Idah.

Kyogo is one of several strikers to have been linked with a Celtic Park move already this month, and this weekend, another name entered the conversation.

So, how likely is Kieron Bowie to join Celtic this winter? Tam McManus has had his say.

Bowie made his Scotland debut last summer, and has been at Easter Road for 18 months.

His performances this season – particularly in some of Hibs’ biggest games – have drawn a lot of positive attention.

It has been reported that it would take the Hoops upwards of £6 million to lure the striker in January. He is also reportedly of interest to Rangers.

But speaking on PLZ Soccer’s Football Show, Hibs hero Tam McManus has made his expectation clear: Bowie won’t be on the move this January.

Asked about the rumoured interest in him from Glasgow:, McManus said: “I don’t think they are going to get Kieron Bowie in this window.

“I don’t think anyone will get him. Maybe in the summer. Are you going to put a bid in for him or are you just declaring an interest? Of course they are interested.

“He’s one of the top young Scottish players in the league. I think he’d go into both Celtic and Rangers just now and improve them. I think he’s a really, really good young player.”

The 23-year-old began his professional career at Raith Rovers before joining Northampton Town, where he made 85 EFL appearances.

Other reported striker targets for Celtic in January

O’Neill has poured cold water on the Kyogo suggestions, describing a move as ‘unlikely’ and revealing that the player wants to prove himself at Birmingham.

A similar pattern unfolded with Ivorian striker Ibrahim Diabate – Celtic were reportedly ‘leading the race’ for him, but Swedish sources have insisted that there has been no contact between the clubs.

Mohamed Bamba is the latest Celtic target, with reports emerging of a loan-to-buy bid being launched. Another Ivorian striker, Bamba plays for Lorient in France.

Many are also tipping Callum Wilson for a move to Celtic, but this one hasn’t gotten off the ground just yet.
