Celtic are closing in on their first signing of the summer transfer window and it will address the biggest position of need in Brendan Rodgers’ squad.

Renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that the Bhoys are now in negotiations to sign goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with the ‘final details’ being sorted on the move.

Schmeichel is currently a free agent after leaving Anderlecht at the end of last season so there will be little standing in Celtic’s way to get this one over the line.

The Danish goalkeeper is well known to Brendan Rodgers. The pair worked together at Leicester City where he was the manager’s number one shot-stopper.

Rodgers even recently referenced the 37-year-old, telling reporters that he was a ‘very, very good’ goalkeeper when asked about potentially moving for the free agent. [Football Scotland]

Kasper Schmeichel would replace experience with experience at Celtic

Like the recently retired Joe Hart, the veteran has vast experience playing at the top level in the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League and international tournaments.

The Dane racked up close to 300 appearances in the English top flight and has earned over 100 caps for his country. He remains at the top, too, having recently played all four of Denmark’s matches at Euro 2024.

Hart brought a big presence to the position at the Bhoys and it makes sense why Celtic would try to pursue a similar profile.

Some may question the signing of another older option rather than a younger goalkeeper who can be a number one for years but Schmeichel has a lot of upside in the short term within a tricky market.

Rodgers recently expressed a desire to get some players in the door before the club’s USA tour next week.

As stated, Rodgers would know exactly what he’s getting on and off the pitch. Schmeichel was a captain at the Foxes so can be a dressing room leader in support of Callum McGregor.

Let’s see where this one goes and whether or not Celtic will be looking to bring in another goalkeeper to compete for the place.
