Celtic have been linked with a move for Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy this week.

Website 90min.com reported yesterday that the Scottish champions fancy themselves as front runners when it comes to his signing, ahead of Premier League clubs such as Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

The outlet states that Palace are willing to listen to offers for the Republic of Ireland international despite the player only joining the club last summer.

McCarthy, who has made over 250 appearances in the English top-flight since leaving Scottish football in 2009, is a boyhood Celtic fan and is said to be keen on making a switch to Glasgow too.

However, is he an improvement on Scott Brown, Olivier Ntcham and Callum McGregor?

Those three have been the lynchpins of the Celtic midfield in recent seasons, with Ryan Christie and Tom Rogic also available to offer more attacking flair through the middle.

Where the 40-cap star fits into that is a puzzle and it remains to be seen if the Bhoys will really firm up their interest and make a formal bid.

If Ntcham is perhaps on the way out of the club or Neil Lennon is planning to use Brown in a more reduced role, a move for the player makes more sense if it’s financially viable.

Fan response to the report has not been very positive, with plenty taking to social media over the last couple of days to share their displeasure.

Do you agree that we don’t need McCarthy, or do you think he has something to offer on our quest for ten-in-a-row?

These supporters have been tweeting about it all recently…

In other news, Neil Lennon continues to be impressed by Patryk Klimala in training.
