Celtic have made a hobby out of getting further profit out of former players via sell-on fees.
Earlier this year, Jeremie Frimpong’s move to Liverpool earned Celtic a seven-figure sum, just as his countryman Virgil Van Dijk did in January 2018.
The windfall was long-awaited, with Frimpong linked with a host of big-money moves in the years following his move to Bayer Leverkusen in 2021.
Former fan-favourite Matt O’Riley has also made a big move this summer, swapping Brighton for Marseille, but it remains to be seen whether the transfer will be made permanent in order to make any money for Celtic.
One which would have bagged some cash for the club was seemingly set to happen on Deadline Day, but a surprise last-minute issue has scuppered the money-spinning move.

Oh Hyeon-Gyu’s Stuttgart move has been cancelled after a medical issue
Eyebrows were raised in Glasgow when Oh Hyeon-Gyu, a bit-part striker under Brendan Rodgers and Ange Postecoglou at Celtic, was reportedly targeted for a £24 million transfer by Bundesliga side Stuttgart.
After selling Nick Woltemade to Newcastle for a club-record fee, the German club were ready to splash the cash on the Korean striker to replace him.
However, according to Belgian transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri, Stuttgart pointed out an issue during Oh’s medical examination, which will prevent him from leaving Genk.
Oh will now return to Belgium, where he is now the first-choice striker following Toru Arokodare’s move to Wolves.
Oh is another example of Celtic’s transfer woes
In the same summer during which Oh left Celtic for a slight profit, Adam Idah was brought to Glasgow for a £9 million fee.
In the year since, the players’ values have trended in opposite directions, leaving fans to wonder what might have been.
The Korean international was signed to replace Giorgos Giakoumakis, who also found a new club in PAOK of Greece this summer.
The support’s consensus at the time was that Oh was a downgrade on the Greek forward, but it may have simply been a case of the right player at the wrong time.
Given the discontent surrounding the club’s most recent transfer window, fans are not short on things to be unhappy about – Oh is just one reason on a long list.
