Former coach of Osaze Urhoghide talks up Celtic transfer; his best position, his personality

Mick McGann, the coach who worked with Osaze Urhoghide at grassroots levels, has been talking up the defender’s transfer to Celtic and giving insight into his early years.

Urhoghide worked with McGann at Hounslow at U16 level before being spotted by pro teams. He was instrumental in ensuring scouts would come along to see the defender in action.

The new Celtic signing had such ability that McGann would use him in a variety of positions, including midfield.

However, McGann reckons he is now set to flourish at centre-back.

He told The Scottish Sun: “I played Osaze in central midfield because he was the best player I had. For our club over the years, he would score 20 to 30 goals a season. Going forward, I think he will develop into a proper central defender.

“Full-back would be easy enough for him just now but I’d like to see him play in the middle. He’s quick, he can defend and if someone can get a hold of him and coach him well, I think he will develop. Osaze is a natural talent. He’s very good and with the right guidance, he can really kick on.

“Osaze has always been big and physical but moving to Celtic is a jump. I’m an Arsenal fan but I would class Celtic as being one of the top six clubs in Britain. There is huge pressure to deliver results and win trophies, so that can be a shock for anyone.

“Osaze is a bright kid and I think he will handle the move but it will still be a big moment in his life. He will be living in Scotland, he will need to adapt on and off the pitch, but I think he will be clever enough to cope. Everyone likes Osaze. He is a nice kid and that always helps you settle.”

Celtic have to be patient with Urhoghide

As with all young signings, it’s wrong to expect them to make an immediate impact with the first-team. Urhoghide may have experience of English Championship football, but it could take a lot of adjustment to life at Celtic.

Our transfers last year were evidence enough not everyone takes to life at Lennoxtown immediately.

However, hopes do seem high that the new signing can make more of a Jeremie Frimpong style impact than a Luca Connell one.

Everything being said about him is positive and I’m looking forward to seeing him in pre-season.
