Frank McAvennie has urged Celtic to make a January move for goalkeeper Dean Henderson whilst appearing on the Celtic Huddle podcast.
The Hoops were linked with a loan move for the Manchester United goalkeeper by 90min.com, as the 23-year-old has been looking for first-team football to clinch a place in England’s Euro 2020 squad.
McAvennie is certainly in favour of Celtic making such a move. He is a big fan of the player, who was on-loan at Sheffield United last season.
“He’s going to be a superstar, he’s getting 100,000 grand a week, you don’t give that to a goalkeeper if he’s not any good, they (Manchester United) know he’s going to challenge” McAvennie said, as quoted by the Celtic Huddle podcast.
Signed a long-term deal recently
Henderson did indeed sign a new long-term deal with Manchester United in August, with the Daily Mail reporting that the wages are £120,000 a week.
Therefore, if Celtic do elect to make a move for Henderson than it would obviously have to be a loan deal. Would the Hoops sign another goalkeeper though, that is what Neil Lennon has to ponder.
If he does sign another goalkeeper, it would show that he is not convinced by Vasilis Barkas or Scott Bain. That would be a real concern. Especially when you consider that Barkas was signed for big money in the last transfer window.
Would potentially be an upgrade
Would Henderson like to join Celtic? That is another issue that has to be taken into account. That remains to be seen. However, he would potentially be an upgrade on the goalkeepers that are currently at the club.
Only time will tell if Celtic decide to sign another goalkeeper in the January window. However, if the Hoops find out that Henderson is available, then a move for the player should certainly be considered.
He might not be a ‘superstar’ yet. However, Henderson is the type of player that Celtic should be looking to add to the squad if possible.
