Giorgos Giakoumakis speaks after joining Celtic on five-year deal
Celtic have announced the signing of Giorgos Giakoumakis on a five-year deal from Dutch side VVV-Venlo.
The Greek striker scored a whopping 26 goals for the Dutch team, despite their relegation from the Eredivisie.
That prompted a lot of interest. Qatari sides and German powerhouses Werder Bremen were keen on the striker. However, the Bhoys have landed the goal-machine on a multi-year deal.
Giakoumakis, upon signing for Celtic, said [Celtic FC]:
“I’m really delighted to commit my long term future to Celtic and I can’t wait to get started with my new team mates.
“Celtic is one of the world’s great football clubs with the best fans around. It is a Club I have admired for so long and it will now be an honour to wear this famous jersey. To know that the Manager wanted me so much to join Celtic is really humbling and it makes me know I have made the right choice.
“We have some exciting challenges this season in Scotland and in Europe and I will be doing all I can to help the team as much as possible and bring our supporters success.”
Finally: Celtic secure Giorgos Giakoumakis after weeks of speculation
Well, that’s one through the door this Transfer Deadline Day.
After weeks of speculation, the Bhoys have finally landed a big target. It’s Postecoglou’s 10th of the summer, but Celtic fans will still feel that investment is needed in key areas.
Not up front any more, though. With Griffiths taking off today and Odsonne Edouard’s move to Crystal Palace awaiting confirmation, it’s a huge step in the right direction for Celtic.
Physical, but with the technical qualities to bother top opponents, Celtic could use another 20-goal striker. While Kyogo has impressed since joining the Bhoys, he can’t do it alone.
Giakoumakis offers a different option up front. If his prolific spell from last season is anything to go by, the Bhoys could have a real bargain on our hands, here.
