Celtic have agreed a fee with Elfsborg for central-defender Gustaf Lagerbielke, according to a report.

Swedish outlet Expressen, who first reported our interest on Monday, say that the clubs have agreed on the transfer of Lagerbielke.

They say that the fee is around 40 million Swedish Krona, a record for Elfsborg. That equates to around £2.9m.

Expressen say that “only small details remain” around Lagerbielke’s contract and that the Swedish international will now travel to Glasgow to undergo a medical.

Lagerbielke only joined his current side in the summer of 2021, so it has been a fast rise for him in the game.

He is likely to become Celtic‘s sixth summer arrival after Odin Thiago Holm, Marco Tilio, Hyunjun Yang, Hyeokkyu Kwon and Maik Nawrocki.

This is obviously very good news from a Celtic point of view. Carl Starfelt only officially departed the club on Thursday and Lagerbielke looks likely to be in by early next week.

Elfsborg are in action on Sunday against Hammarby but we can probably expect Lagerbielke to sit that one out now, given that this transfer breakthrough has now been made.

He will have his work cut-out getting in to Brendan Rodgers’ starting line-up. Cameron Carter-Vickers is about as nailed-on a starter as you could hope to find in the Celtic squad while the club also paid a decent fee for Maik Nawrocki this summer.

But the competition is a good thing and Lagerbielke sounds like the kind of person who relishes a challenge.

Those are exactly the kind of people who want to be recruiting.
