Celtic midfielder Hyeokkyu Kwon has joined St Mirren on loan until the end of the season, it was announced this evening.

Kwon arrived at the Bhoys during the summer transfer window but has yet to make a competitive debut for the club.

However, he will now get an opportunity to show what he’s made of in the Scottish Premiership after the Buddies took him on board, following discussions between Brendan Rodgers and Stephen Robinson.

The St Mirren manager said in a statement: “He’s a player that comes highly recommended. Celtic were very keen for him to come to us which is a complement to the coaching staff here.

“He’s played a lot of games in South Korea and was signed by Celtic for big money. It was an area we needed to strengthen in midfield and with Keanu away at the Asian Cup it was important that we strengthened there.

“We believe that he [Hyeokkyu] will come in and add that strength. He breaks up play really well and he can start play really well for us as well. I’ve had some good conversations with Brendan Rodgers about him and we’re delighted to have him in.”

The hope will be that Kwon now adjusts to the pace and physicality of the Scottish game before returning to Celtic for a renewed opportunity in the summer.

The 22-year-old is contracted to the Bhoys until the summer of 2028 so there’s a long time for him to prove himself as a potential option at the champions.

It’ll be a good chance for Celtic fans to see if there is any potential there.
