"It's not that straightforward"; Ange Postecoglou on long-term Oliver Abildgaard Celtic option

Ange Postecoglou has signalled that it isn’t as simple as Celtic holding the option on a permanent Oliver Abildgaard move from Rubin Kazan and that the focus around him is purely on this season.

Abildgaard was announced as signing a “season-long” deal at Celtic without a loan or future option being mentioned by the Bhoys. Rubin Kazan’s official announcement did mention a loan, but they reaffirmed they still hold a year’s contract beyond this season.

It’s believed that the Danish midfielder has effectively suspended his contract for a year to allow him to sign outside of Russia, per FIFA’s special dispensation for foreign players, due to the country’s invasion of Ukraine. In effect, it is what we would consider a loan.

In Postecoglou’s media session with the written press, he was asked about holding the option to buy, to which he said, as quoted by The Daily Record: “It’s not that straightforward but we’ve got him for this year and that’s what we are focused on. Come the end of the year we will see where we are and what the options are.

“Oliver is someone we’ve been tracking for quite a while. Obviously we needed some movement out at well as we didn’t want to be carrying too big a squad.

“He’s an experienced player and a really good pro. Everyone I’ve spoken to about him says he’s a really good character and a top professional.

“His playing style will suit us, but he does give us something different with him bringing his size to the no.6 area. I think he’ll be a good option for us.”

Obviously, a long-term future for Abildgaard depends on successfully fitting in to begin with. Given he has only taken part in one training session, there’s a long way to go for all parties.

Still, it is nice to have a little more clarity. We at least know that Celtic don’t hold an outright option on his long-term stay and that this could be a changing situation for all sorts of reasons outside of the club’s control.
