LA Galaxy midfielder Victor Vazquez has stated that Celtic-linked Mat Ryan is “eager” to sign for Real Sociedad.

The Hoops were said to be interested in Ryan last month with Ange Postecoglou weighing up his goalkeeping options [Sky Sports]. However, last week, Mundo Deportivo claimed that Sociedad wanted to take him to Spain.

Ryan touched on the speculation in an interview with Fox Sports last week. He stated a move to Celtic could come about as he weighed up his options. Today, however, the Scottish Sun reports that Ryan is set for a £1m move to Sociedad.

And that’s something that will be backed up by LA man Vazquez. He was teammates with Ryan during their days with Club Brugge, and he states the Aussie has made his mind up.

As quoted by the Daily Record, Vasquez said: “Maty is super motivated, super happy and eager to fight Alex Remiro for the number one keeper position at Sociedad.

“His time in Valencia left him with a very good taste in his mouth, even though he didn’t play as much as he wanted.

“He has always been very attached to Spain, he loves its culture and its food.”

So it looks as though Ryan has made up his mind. It’s certainly odd to be hearing it for a former teammate who plays for LA Galaxy, but Celtic fans now know what side of the fence the Australian is sitting on.

It looks as though something on this could be announced within days. And it doesn’t seem as if Sociedad have much in the way of competition for his signature.

There have been no reports that Celtic have been itching to move quickly either. With Vasilis Barkas and Scott Bain slugging it out in pre-season, there’s been no rush to add to the mix.

Then again, Ryan would be a clear upgrade on anything we have. That’s what makes it so frustrating that he’s set to go to Sociedad unchallenged. When speaking to Fox Sports, the goalkeeper confirmed he hadn’t heard anything from Parkhead.

You would’ve thought that Celtic held an ace in Ange Postecoglou. Not only did the pair work well together with the Australian national team, but Ryan could’ve moved to Parkhead and help bolster the profile of Australian managers.

Instead, he looks like choosing a different path. It’ll be frustrating when it’s officially confirmed, but Celtic simply have to move on quickly.
