Lack of follow-up in Romaine Sawyers is a Celtic transfer mystery

One of the transfer mysteries of the summer involves Celtic’s pursuit of Brentford’s Romaine Sawyers. The Hoops had a £1.5 million bid for the player rejected almost two weeks ago.

It was then reported that Brentford valued the player at £2.5 million. But there has not been a follow-up bid for the Hoops since the original.

It is not as if Celtic have been buying midfielders in the meantime. Luca Connell arrived before the Hoops moved for Sawyers.

So why have the Hoops not made a second bid for the player? Perhaps they feel that the player is not worth the sum that Brentford want for him.

May have turned attention to new targets

Maybe Celtic have turned their attention to new targets, and Sawyers is not on the list. Possibly they will make another move for the player, but have other signing matters to sort out first – like signing a right-back.

The fact Celtic bid for the player in the first place means that Neil Lennon is keen to bring the player to Glasgow. The lack of moment since the original bid is concerning though.

Sawyers would have been a worthwhile addition to the Hoops midfield. However, unless something changes in the Hoops’ transfer strategy he will not become a Celtic player in the summer transfer window.
