Aberdeen are hoping to conclude a deal for Celtic defender Liam Scales by this time next week, The Press & Journal have reported.

The Dons are set to resume pre-season training late next week ahead of a trip to Spain this summer and Jim Goodwin is keen on getting Scales on board in time.

In fact, the Pittodrie manager wants the Irish defender there on day one.

Aberdeen’s preferred option when it comes to Scales remains a permanent switch, although there’s an acknowledgement at their end that a loan-to-buy structure may be necessary.

Scales is reported to be up for an Aberdeen move but this is quite early in the summer for transfer activity, so I would be surprised if the player and indeed Celtic weren’t hoping to keep their options open for a little longer.

What’s clear is that the former Shamrock Rovers man will be struggling to get regular game time under Ange Postecoglou over the coming 12 months.

He only made eight starts in all competitions last season and competition for the left-back slot is expected to ramp up heading into the new campaign.

Celtic are actively looking for players in that position during the summer period. Whoever is signed will be above Scales in the pecking order and directly competing with Greg Taylor on the left flank.

Scales has some admirers amongst the Celtic support but realistically we can’t hoard players who aren’t going to get the minutes required to progress.

A loan to Aberdeen would do the player the world of good and if it ends up permanent, it likely means Celtic have moved on to a higher calibre of performer.
