Reports this week indicate that Celtic will pursue the signing of goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas despite an initial bid being rejected by Greek side AEK Athens.

Sport24 have reported that Director of Football Operations Nick Hammond is the man at the Scottish champions most keen on Barkas, who has a wealth of experience in his homeland alongside international cap recognition.

It’s said by the outlet that Celtic remain in negotiations with AEK about a move after a £3.5m offer that was kicked out last week, also offering Barkas £10,000-a-week to earn a living in Glasgow.

While both offers may have to improve before the Bhoys land their man, the report does provide hope that Barkas could be a Celtic player before too long.

Barkas has an impressive record at his current club, keeping a massive 61 clean sheets in 111 matches across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

With the experience of winning a league title, as well as Champions League group stage appearances, he has an excellent profile for a club like Celtic and could prove to be something of a bargain.

Still just 26-years-old, the 10-cap international could even become a mainstay in the Hoops side for years to come if he proves successful.

At the very least he looks to be an improvement on Scott Bain, who has yet to show he is truly worthy of being a number one choice at Celtic Park.

Fans have been doing the customary research online about the player, uncovering highlights, his best saves and playing history.

It’s fair to say there is a bit of excitement about this one.

For some, Barkas has emerged as the favoured signing choice if Fraser Forster is not returning to the club.
