Martin O’Neill has delivered a transfer message that Benjamin Nygren would be wise to consider before deciding where his Celtic future lies.
Nygren’s 21-goal debut Celtic season has had teams sniffing around the midfielder this summer. The Swede has also stopped short of guaranteeing that he will remain at Parkhead.
But as transfer rumours continue about Nygren, O’Neill has delivered a thinly-veiled warning that Celtic fans will instantly recognise and relate to.
You guys voted for Benjamin Nygren as the player of the season. Would you change your vote if you could go back now?
Martin O’Neill’s apparent Benjamin Nygren Celtic warning
Celtic fans have watched players leave Parkhead for big-money moves and fail to make the grade over the years.
When asked about the interest in Nygren and if he could leave Celtic this summer, O’Neill sent a message to his World Cup midfielder.
O’Neill told The Celtic Way, “What you don’t want to do is, you don’t want to stop some boys who are doing really well.
“If they offer one good enough football club for a start, then the players probably can earn a lot more money, things like that.
“But the grass is not always greener.”
O’Neill has already admitted Nygren’s goals and assists could attract attention. The Swede was Celtic’s top goalscorer and one of the first names on his team sheet.
Celtic face a financial reality over Benjamin Nygren
There was also a blunt admission for Celtic supporters. O’Neill knows the club cannot reject every figure placed in front of them.
“I think you’d be well aware that in Scotland, if you’re turning down major, major offers, then I think that might not be financially feasible,” he added.
Nygren signed a five-year Celtic contract last summer, so the club are under no pressure to accept any offers. There is also no confirmed offer on the table.
Nygren has been warned that the biggest wage does not always lead to the best career move. But Celtic supporters also know that a big enough bid could change everything.
