Michael Gannon reveals truth behind Lazio interest in Celtic’s Arne Engels

Lazio’s interest in Arne Engels has quickly become the headline, but the reality behind it tells a very different story. Celtic’s position was already set long before that link surfaced, and it changes how this situation should be viewed.

The Lazio angle has gained traction, yet it does not reflect the strength or direction of the current market. What is being discussed publicly is not where the real pressure is building.

This is not a new development for Celtic or Engels. The groundwork was laid months ago and the club’s response at that point still shapes everything now.

Pick one player to sell for ‘£20m’ this summer. Engels or Nygren?

Who you picking and why, Celtic fans…

Celtic already dealt with Arne Engels transfer reality

Celtic rejected £20m upfront with £5m in add-ons during the January window, a level of offer that would usually force movement. Instead, the club held firm and reset expectations around Engels’ value.

Michael Gannon said: “Yeah, listen the Lazio link at the moment is fairly tenuous. So it relies on a few things happening in terms of players getting out and managers getting changed and all this kind of stuff.

“But what is clear is that that the ball is rolling on a on Arne Engels’ summer exit. He was close in the winter. Obviously I’m still surprised that that Celtic knocked back £20 million up front with another £5m add-ons. Serious money.

“I think his absence actually highlighted how important a player was he is for Celtic.  I think there will be interest in the summer. In fact, I know there is interest in him in England and abroad. I think he’s tailor made for the English game to be perfectly honest with you.

“I mean Forest were the first ones to make their move. I wouldn’t be surprised if other clubs at that kind of level had a look at him as well because he’s a big strong guy.

“He’s good on the ball. He can pick a pass and listen, he’s a Belgian international. I expect there to be the big money bids coming in for him.”

Celtic see through Lazio noise as bigger Engels interest builds

The Lazio dominates headlines, but it does not carry the same weight as Nottingham Forest’s concrete bids in the January transfer window.

That context shifts the focus away from Italy and back towards the more serious market. There is confirmed interest in England and abroad.

Engels’ profile explains that demand. Gannon described him as “a big strong guy. He’s good on the ball. He can pick a pass and listen, he’s a Belgian international.”

Those attributes align directly with Premier League recruitment, which is where the strongest competition is likely to come from. It is a broader and more aggressive market than the current Lazio link suggests.

The Lazio story may draw attention, but it does not tell the whole story. Celtic already faced the real decision in January and chose to wait, and that choice is now setting up what comes next this summer.
