Since Stuart Armstrong left Celtic to join Southampton for £7 million in 2018, the Hoops have found it difficult to replace him in the team. He was an excellent player for the Hoops, particularly in the invincible treble winning season of 2016-17.
However, the Hoops have might have finally found a replacement in the form of a player who ironically is on-loan from Southampton.
That player is Mohamed Elyounoussi, who is currently at Celtic until the end of the season. Now, Armstrong and Elyounoussi might play in slightly different positions for the Hoops.
Reminiscent of treble winner
However, the Norwegian’s performance in the recent 4-0 win over Aberdeen was reminiscent of Armstrong at his best.
For a start, he scored a goal. Something which Armstrong did regularly when he was at his best for the Hoops. But it was the way he loitered at the edge of the penalty box, waiting for the killer pass or shot, which really had shades of Armstrong.
That can only be a good thing for Celtic as the Hoops aim to win their ninth title in a row. Elyounoussi was a bit of a surprise when it came.
He hadn’t been heavily linked with the Hoops like so many other players had been during the summer. The move has paid off so far.
Performances have been more than decent
Elyounoussi has scored four goals for the Hoops, and he has also provided three assists, in eight games. That is a more than decent return from an attacking midfielder.
Perhaps the only note of caution on the horizon for Celtic fans is that the duo may end up playing together for Southampton next season.
The Hoops may not be able to afford to sign Elyounoussi on a permanent basis. There has to be a fear that he will return to Southampton and not come back to Glasgow when his loan deal ends in May.
For now though, Celtic fans should look to enjoy a very talented player.
