Apparent Celtic target Mohamed Magdy has signed a new contract with Al Ahly despite speculation linking him with a move to Scotland, the Egyptian club have confirmed in a statement, via The Daily Record.

They said: “Mohamed Magdy has agreed a new improved contract and is now more appreciated financially than in his previous contract.

“We hope this will put an end to speculation about his future.”

It’s reported he has signed for four more years at the club.

It comes after the player’s agent used Celtic’s name to create speculation about his client, suggesting the Scottish champions wanted to sign him and then immediately send him out on loan (The Glasgow Times).

Al Ahly hit back, insisting there had been no offer from the Bhoys and criticising the creation of uncertainty around the attacking midfielder’s future before a big African Champions League match at the end of the month (The Daily Record).

This looks to be a case of Celtic’s name being used for a player’s own ends. Enough pressure has been put on Al Ahly to offer him better terms.

The five-cap international is apparently happy where he is.

It was always an odd link.

Celtic aren’t in great need of an attacking midfielder with players like Tom Rogic, Ryan Christie and Mohamed Elyounoussi in the first-team squad.

We’ve also never used the Egyptian market.

At least it’s now all been put to rest.

In other news, an angry Neil Lennon has hit back at a negative Celtic article.
