Neil Lennon and Celtic’s head of football operations Nick Hammond will no doubt be working on bringing players to the club in the January transfer window.
The Hoops will be looking to sign players who can add something to the squad, and have qualities that allow you to stand-out from the crowd.
With that in mind, Lennon has outlined the qualities he looks for in any potential Celtic signing.
“The whole package”
“Character is important, like stamina, speed, enthusiasm and pace. A lot of those attributes along with temperament make up the whole package and that’s what you are looking for” he said, as reported by the Daily Record.
The Lennon and Hammond partnership will be key to how Celtic do transfer business going forward. Both men will hopefully share a similar outlook when it comes to signing players.
The ‘temperament’ issue that Lennon identifies is interesting. Playing for Celtic is unlike playing for most teams. At other teams a draw in a league game isn’t always a poor result.
Team is expected to win most games
That isn’t the case at Celtic though. In the league especially, the team is expected to win almost every game it plays. That sort of pressure doesn’t apply at other teams. You need to have the ability to cope with that kind of pressure to win all the time.
Of course, football ability is also important, as outlined by Lennon. Both ‘speed’ and ‘pace’ are mentioned, which indicated that perhaps Lennon is hoping to mould his Celtic team into a counter-attacking side. That could pay off, particularly in Europe.
It is interesting to hear from the Hoops boss about the qualities he looks for in potential signings. Hopefully the players that come in to the club in January have the attributes that Lennon has outlined.
