AC Milan’s interest in Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer looks to be cooling as they move on to a loan pursuit for Schalke star Matija Nastasic, Sky Sport Italia have reported this week.
The outlet says the Italian giants are in negotiations with the Germans about a loan-to-buy deal as Ajer drops down the pecking order when it comes to potential recruits.
Sky reporter Anthony Joseph believes this loan route is one they prefer, with the finances available to technical director Paolo Maldini limited.
Finances are tight at the Serie A club and they would prefer to bring in a centre-back on loan in this window, with a view to buying next summer.

That’s good news for Celtic, who are unlikely to be tempted into letting the player leave on a loan basis, even if there’s a purchase option attached to the deal.
Neil Lennon has made it perfectly clear over the last few days that he isn’t interested in an Ajer departure and wants to keep the Norwegian international for our ten-in-a-row push (BBC Scotland).
Surely the club would only entertain a massive offer?
Keeping as settled a squad as possible in place could be crucial for maintaining consistency over the next few months.

Although Ajer has had something of a shaky start to the season, we know he can perform well and his ability on the ball is helpful in Scottish Premiership matches.
I’d much prefer him to stick around if we can’t secure a large transfer fee.
