Arne Engels is reportedly firmly on the radar of Sunderland, Fulham and Nottingham Forest this summer.

The trio have joined an ever-growing list of clubs interested in the Celtic man.

Forest had a £25 million bid for Engels rejected in January, with Parkhead chiefs simply unable to facilitate a replacement so late in the window.

He ended up playing a leading role in Celtic’s league and Scottish Cup double, starting every game in the season run-in.

Pick one player to sell for ‘£20m’ this summer. Engels or Nygren?

Who you picking and why, Celtic fans…

Nottingham Forest, Sunderland and Fulham interested in Celtic’s Arne Engels

According to Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports, Forest, Fulham and Sunderland are all interested in Engels this summer.

He is widely thought to have played his last game in Hoops.

He doesn’t just have interest down south. Lazio and AC Milan are reportedly chasing him in Italy, whilst RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund could bring him back to Germany.

Forest’s £25 million bid was the third of three sent in the final 24 hours of the transfer window, with the club desperate for a midfielder after losing Oleksandr Zinchenko and Douglas Luiz.

They have since changed manager from Sean Dyche to Vitor Pereira, but this doesn’t appear to have changed their stance.

Fulham are also without a manager after losing Marco Silva, whilst Sunderland are expected to spend big this summer after an unexpected European qualification under Regis Le Bris.

Martin O’Neill was protective of Engels in January, insisting that the deal would only happen if the Parkhead hierarchy received a £100 million offer.

After an injury lay-off which kept him out for two months, he returned to the starting XI for the final few months of the season, putting in some of his best performances in a hooped jersey.

Martin O’Neill on Celtic’s Arne Engels

Forest’s bid in January was initially sent during Celtic’s 2-0 win over Falkirk, in which Engels played.

Asked about it after the game, O’Neill said: “Honestly, I’m telling you, I didn’t know a thing about it.

“If they’d done it, then they must have done it during the game. No, no, no, seriously. No, seriously, because I didn’t know a thing about it.

“And I’d want it rebuffed, unless it was £100 million. And then I think the board would step in then.”
