A player who was briefly a Celtic transfer target in the summer is still a free agent almost a month into the new season.

The Sun recently reported that former Leicester City right-back Danny Simpson, who was linked with the Hoops earlier in the summer, is training with West Brom as he bids to find a new club.

Simpson left Leicester at the end of last season after his contract ran out. The Scottish Sun reported back in July that the player was set to join up with Celtic for a trial.

However, the Hoops later cancelled the trial, as revealed by Neil Lennon, after agreeing to sign Hatem Abd Elhamed.

That turned out to be a good move. So far Elhamed has been excellent for the Hoops in his short time at the club.

Whilst Celtic might still be interested in some free agents, that won’t be the case with Simpson. The Hoops have added another right-back to the squad recently, with the signing of Moritz Bauer on loan from Stoke.

At one stage it seemed like the Hoops would only have one right-back in the squad. Now it could be argued that they have three in the squad.

Whilst Simpson might have been an option for Celtic, the Hoops have moved on, which looks to have been the right move judging by how well Elhamed is playing.
