Celtic should go after Filip Benkovic after Leicester City have reportedly bid for Jannik Vestergaard.
The Sun report that the Foxes have made a move of around £15 million for the Southampton man.
Former Hoops loanee Benkovic is down the pecking order at Brendan Rodgers’ high flying side. He could perhaps go even further down the list if the Danish stopper comes in.
Celtic should test Filip Benkovic metal with loan offer
The Croatian was on loan at the Scottish champions last season from the former Premier League champs.
After a strong start of the season, injuries curtailed his chances in the second half.
The 22-year-old went back to the Foxes where he has played one cup game since, before getting injured again.
Celtic’s numbers are short at centre-back and one injury could disrupt Neil Lennon’s set up.
There is no denying Benkovic’s qualities. He’s arguably better than most of the defenders the Hoops have.
A loan deal with perhaps an option to buy would be the best option for all parties.
Lennon can see if Benkovic can still cut it and keep fit, while Leicester get a bit of money back for a player down the pecking order.
Foxes waiting on new signing before selling?
The option to do this would be further increased should Vestergaard go to Leicester in this window.
Southampton are virtually safe and would be silly to turn down £15 for the 27-year-old defender.
The 6ft6in stopper joined the Saints from Borussia Monchengladbach for £18 million in 2018.
Losing a million after two years work isn’t bad for manager Ralph Hassenhuttl.
However, the Celts need to act fast to get Benkovic back as there will be other teams looking to sign him.
Derby County have reportedly made Benkovic their number one target as they chase promotion to the Premier League.
This isn’t one that Lennon and co can wait until the last day of the window to get – it needs to happen now.
The financial clout of the English Championship could be enough to see the transfer over the line.
