Celtic have tied down many of their players to new contracts this season. The likes of Scott Bain, James Forrest and Callum McGregor all signed long-term deals with the Hoops.
However, there is one player whose contract expires at Celtic at the end of the season, and it does seem bemusing that there has been a lack of movement in the progress to get him to sign a new deal. That player is Jonny Hayes.
Hayes’ contract status is odd, especially when you consider that he has featured frequently for the Hoops this season.
The Irishman has played 26 times for the Hoops this season, which is far more than a squad player would play. He has also played in some big games, against the likes of Lazio and Rangers.
Gone quiet since December
Neil Lennon stated back in December, as reported by STV, that talks had started over a new talk for Hayes. But since then, it has all gone very quiet.
What makes the situation even more bemusing is that Celtic haven’t had the best of seasons at left-back, where Hayes mostly played this season.
For example, Boli Bolingoli has fallen completely out of favour recently even though he started the season as first choice left-back.
In a battle for left-back place
Therefore, at the moment it looks like a battle between Hayes and Greg Taylor for the left-back slot.
As for who is going to win that battle, it looks like it will be Taylor, as Hayes looks to be on his way out of Celtic unless something dramatic happens in the next few weeks.
It really is a bit of a bemusing situation, and hopefully a solution is found in the next month. Hayes is a more than useful player to have in the Celtic squad. It makes sense to keep him at the club for at least another season, to help the Hoops go for 10 in a row.
