Celtic’s ongoing search to add more players to the squad in the quest to win 10 in a row took another twist following some recent comments made by Neil Lennon.
The Hoops boss commented, as reported by the Daily Record, that free agent striker Steven Fletcher is a player that he rates as ‘good’. However, he then went on to say that he ‘won’t talk about individuals’.
Is Fletcher a good player as Lennon stated? Yes. You don’t score 13 goals at the age of 33 in a difficult league in the Championship – like Fletcher did last season – unless you have something about you.
Player would add experience to Hoops squad
He would also add an extra bit of experience that most of Celtic’s strikers lack. With his goalscoring ability and experience, it is understandable why Lennon would consider adding Fletcher to Celtic’s squad.
Fletcher would more than likely do a good job for the Hoops as a squad player. However, if Celtic are currently looking to sign strikers sooner rather than later, then Fletcher should not be at the top of the list of potential signings.
In this pivotal season, Celtic should be looking to sign players who will make an immediate first-team impact. That is certain to be the case with recent arrival Vasilis Barkas. It would also likely be the case with the strikers that Celtic have been linked with recently, Ivan Toney and Albian Ajeti.
Veteran would probably not make immediate impact
It wouldn’t be the case with Fletcher, he is not a player who will be immediately thrown into the first-team. However, if after the Hoops have signed another striker, Neil Lennon feels that Fletcher can have some impact on the club then Celtic should make a move to sign the player.
For the moment though, Fletcher should not be on the list of players that Celtic should be signing in the next week or two. However, that could eventually change, and there could come a time when the player signs for the club, only time will tell.
