‘Priority project’ of new Stade Rennais sporting director revealed with Celtic hero Kyogo at its heart

Former Celtic striker Kyogo surely regrets leaving for Stade Rennais in January.

The Japanese star’s £10m switch to Ligue 1 has been an unmitigated disaster as he was limited to just a few appearances off the bench.

Kyogo is yet to score his first goal for Rennes, which is unlikely to arrive anyway given the appointment of Loic Désiré as the club’s new sporting director.

He was appointed in May having previously worked as Strasbourg’s head of recruitment. And now his summer transfer plan has been mapped out.

Kyogo added to Stade Rennais transfer cull list

Information revealed by RMC Sport explains that Désiré wants to downsize the first-team squad by a considerable margin.

Rennes currently have 40 senior players at their disposal, which includes a number of fringe men returning from loan spells.

Désiré wants to reduce that number to 25 as part of an ‘enormous downsizing project’ that is likely to see Kyogo moved on.

The former Celtic striker has reportedly been added to the club’s deadwood list as Désiré gets set to cull the Ligue 1 side’s first-team squad.

RMC Sport have stated: “This start to the transfer window (for Rennes) has also been productive in terms of departures, with the sales of Lorenz Assignon to Stuttgart for around €15 million and Adrien Truffert to Bournemouth, which was made official this Monday for the same amount.

“We can add the bonuses released by Désiré Doué, which are said to be close to €10 million, plus a few million more on the permanent transfer of Mathys Tel to Tottenham.

“A nice transfer is also expected for Arnaud Kalimuendo, who is being tracked in Germany and England and whose departure should bring in at least €25 million.

“But Rennes still has a huge job ahead of it, with massive downsizing essential to balance the dressing room and the club’s payroll.

“The club still has nearly 40 professional contracts. The goal is to reduce this figure to 25 by relying on the young professionals from the training center. This is the priority project for sporting director Loic Désiré, who officially took office last month.

“Christopher Wooh, Mikayil Faye, Hans Hateboer, Mahamadou Nagida, Andres Gomez, Kyogo Furuhashi in particular, plus the loan returns of Leo Ostigard, Albert Gronbaek, Fabian Rieder, Glen Kamara, Baptiste Santamaria, Ibrahim Salah, Warmed Omari, Bertug Yilidrim, Henrik Meister… the list of players to manage is enormous.”

Kyogo on his future at Rennes

The Daily Record has published a quote from a Kyogo interview in Japan which outlines what the striker’s immediate plan is this summer.

He is allegedly committed to returning to pre-season training with Rennes before making a final decision on where his future lies.

However, as stated above, Kyogo may be told fairly quickly upon his return to France that he is no longer needed and will be moved on if possible.

Kyogo has said: “I will decide on my future after seeing how things go during the pre-season.”
