Charlie Wyke confirms he's leaving Sunderland after Celtic contract reports

Charlie Wyke has posted a farewell message to Sunderland supporters, amidst a flurry of Celtic speculation.

Over the last few weeks, the Sunderland striker had been heavily linked with a move to Paradise. Today, on an Instagram post, Wyke shared a goodbye message to the Black Cats support, which read:

“Thankyou [sic] to the @Sunderlandafcofficial fans who supported me from day one & good luck for the future”.

Interestingly, there’s further Wyke intrigue via reputable journalist Alan Nixon. Nixon has said that Wigan are close to snapping up the English striker, and that a move to Celtic was “never [his] story”.

Wyke, who scored a phenomenal 30 goals in all competitions last season [Transfermarkt], was first linked to Celtic in April. Former Bhoys defender Mark Wilson claimed that the 28-year-old was on the Hoops’ radar, on the Celtic Huddle Podcast. Since then, the rumour has grown arms and legs. The Northern Echo wrote in late June that Wyke “preferred” a move to Celtic.

An exciting seven days for Celtic fans is about to get underway

A few factors which shed doubt on Charlie Wyke deal

Although Wyke to Celtic had seemed like a foregone conclusion, there are some factors at play here. If Wigan have offered more money than us, then that’s fine. There won’t be any tears shed from Celtic fans if we don’t sign him.

Add that to the potential of an Ajeti resurgence, Kevin Nisbet rumours and Bayo potentially being involved beyond the summer, and there’s too many players for one or two positions. Let alone the fact that Leigh Griffiths signed a new deal, and that Odsonne Edouard hasn’t actually left yet.

Then there’s the Ange factor. Is he really going to be keen on signing a 28-year-old who’s had one admittedly spectacular season at a level below Celtic? To be honest, I’m not entirely sure that’d be the case.

Whatever happens, it won’t be the last we hear about Charlie Wyke over the next few days. However legitimate Celtic’s interest is, it’s being tested right now.
