Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson reckons Celtic could make a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton this summer, amid uncertainty around his future.
Robinson worked with Heaton as a fellow shot-stopper at Burnley between 2015 and 2017 and reckons he could be up for a move to the Scottish Premiership if he says goodbye to the Villans.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “Whoever comes in at Celtic, one of their first tasks will be to sign a new number one.
“Tom Heaton is a possibility. Logistically, would he be willing to move to Glasgow? I’m not sure. He might be very settled with his family.
“It would be a huge opportunity for him to play at one of the biggest European clubs though. Could he turn that opportunity down?
“It would be a great signing for Celtic. Heaton would be a great signing for any club. He is a top-class, reliable goalkeeper who would be perfect for Celtic next season.”
Tom Heaton situation should be of interest to Celtic
Heaton is currently serving as back-up to Emiliano Martinez. However, he was originally signed in 2019 with the intention of being the club’s number one.
Villa paid good money for him less than two years ago in 2019 – £8m [BBC] – but a horror injury kept him on the sidelines for a long-time and he’s since fallen down the pecking order.
He is fit and healthy again, regularly appearing on the bench in the Premier League this term.
His contract is now expiring at Villa Park and The Athletic have reported this month that he is considering an exit to find first-team football.
Heaton is now 35 and will likely want to maximise his playing opportunities at this stage of his career.
Celtic meanwhile could do with a reliable goalkeeping option. Scott Bain, Vasilis Barkas and Conor Hazard have all struggled to hold the jersey this season.
On a free transfer, Heaton could well be a player to look at.
