Celtic are ready to go as high as £8m to secure Sheffield United right-back George Baldock this summer, according to the Sheffield Star.

The Sheffield-based outlet reports that sources in Scotland believe the Hoops are ready to splash out between £5m-£8m in order to bag the experienced right-back.

The Star says that Ange Postecoglou has approved the continued monitoring of Baldock’s situation after being given a list of potential transfer options this summer. Baldock was also said to be a target for the club back in the summer of 2019 under Neil Lennon.

Since then, the Englishman has had two seasons of Premier League football. Relegation would ultimately befall him last season, but not before he managed 70 appearances in the top flight [Transfermarkt].

The Star reports that the fee Celtic want to buy at is way below the valuation set by the Blades. However, the Hoops are said to be confident United will come down in their valuation due to a combination of their Premier League relegation and the current market conditions amid the global pandemic.

Celtic move for George Baldock won’t be cheap regardless of the outcome

If Celtic sign George Baldock this summer, it’s going to be one heck of an outlay. Probably even the most we’ve ever paid for a full-back in our history. That should show some incredible trust in the Englishman.

But it still appears that United are itching to hold onto their key men for the new season. Their supporters sounded furious at the prospect of Celtic nipping in for one of their star man too. Sheffield United themselves are reportedly looking for top dollar for Baldock too [The Star].

So it’s difficult to see how Celtic get a deal done. Will Sheffield suddenly change their minds out of nowhere? After all, they also have a new managerial revolution to get behind. With Chris Wilder out and Slavisa Jokanovic in, they’ll be looking to bounce straight back into the Premier League next season.

Baldock will be seen as a key part of that. So it’ll be interesting to see who blinks first here. It’s not as if the ball is in our court here in any way, shape, or form.

We desperately need a right-back in before July 15th due to the UEFA Champions League registration deadline. In addition to that, Baldock is under contract with the Championship club until 2025 [SUFC].

But if the club pulls this one off it would be a hugely impressive start to the rebuild.

In other news, the early season Lennon excuse that Postecoglou must avoid at all costs.
