Arsenal are now showing interest in young Wigan attacker Kyle Joseph, a player linked to Celtic since last July.

The Mirror report that the English Premier League club have been tracking Joseph’s progress for some time and are amongst the clutch of sides eager to sign him this summer.

Joseph, still just 19, has an expiring contract and will be available for a cross-border compensation fee if Celtic make a push to bring him to Glasgow.

The forward was first linked with a switch to Celtic last summer, as we discussed on 67 Hail Hail. Rumours have persisted since then that the Bhoys are keen to bring the Scottish youth international north of the border.

Celtic have been showing great interest in a number of young English-based talents over the last 12 months. The club have already signed up Sheffield Wednesday prospect Liam Shaw on a pre-contract basis.

Kyle Joseph’s career so far

Joseph first showed signs of potential in last season’s FA Youth Cup, scoring an impressive six goals in four matches before the young Wigan side were knocked out by Manchester United’s U18s.

This season he’s made a breakthrough into the senior side, scoring five goals and assisting once in 16 matches. [Transfermarkt]

A move to Scotland may appeal to him on the international front. Although born in London, Joseph is part of the SFA youth set-up and has represented Scotland at U18 and U19 level.

On a compensation basis, signing Joseph seems like a relatively risk-free proposition. If big Premier League clubs are already in the hunt, hopefully we can steal a march and offer him a pathway to regular first-team football.
