Report: Celtic agree fee for striker Georgios Giakoumakis
Celtic have agreed a fee to sign Georgios Giakoumakis, The Daily Record has reported this afternoon.
The paper say the Bhoys will pay a fee of €2.5m (£2.14m) for Eredivisie’s top scorer last season.
Giakoumakis is currently at VVV-Venlo, who were relegated from the Dutch top-flight last term.
However, the Greek striker’s scoring exploits last term have attracted a number of European sides to his availability this summer and Celtic are reported to have offered the best terms to the player.
Personal terms are still to be fully agreed.
However, The Daily Record believe Giakoumakis has been in direct contact with Ange Postecoglou this week, while also holding discussions with German outfit Werder Bremen.
It’s the Bhoys who are now in pole position to land him. The Greek international is reportedly impressed with Postecoglou’s plans for him in the Celtic attack.
Celtic are in need of striking reinforcement with players such as Leigh Griffiths and Albian Ajeti on the fringes of the manager’s selections.
With Odsonne Edouard potentially leaving this summer too, bringing in a hungry striker with recent form, in the prime of his career, would be fantastic business.
Giakoumakis scored 29 goals in 33 appearances last season. That kind of firepower is rarely available for a low seven-figure fee.
Hopefully, we can get a deal for the 26-year-old completely over the line shortly.
With the defence also needing strengthening, time is of the essence for Celtic before the transfer deadline at the end of the month.
