Celtic are close to agreeing terms with VVV-Venlo striker Georgios Giakoumakis, according to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph.

Joseph, an award-winning reporter with Sky Sports, states that a transfer between the clubs would be worth around £2.5m.

Werder Bremen had held talks with the Greek striker. However, the recently relegated German side couldn’t agree on finances. According to Joseph, they’ve brought in Marvin Duksch from Hannover 96 and Dijon’s Roger Assale on loan.

Giakoumakis scored a remarkable 26 goals in 30 games for VVV-Venlo last season. That was despite the Greece international also being relied upon for defensive duties. Unfortunately, his porous VVV-Venlo team were relegated from the Eredivisie.

Football Oranje founder Michael Bell told 67 Hail Hail that Giakoumakis has been a real handful for Dutch defences. Bell said:

“Giakoumakis is a presence up front who is good in the air but also has a strong right foot. He is a handful for the backline and is always full of running.

“Giakoumakis took a lot of shots for VVV last season and scored a varied range of goals. He is a great penalty taker and deadly from close range.”

A few days of striker movement ahead, with Celtic closing in on Giakoumakis?

If Celtic do land Giakoumakis, it creates a pretty considerable rotation of forwards. Kyogo Furuhashi has been outstanding, while Odsonne Edouard remains a force.

Albian Ajeti enjoyed a cameo role against St Mirren, and could still be useful. However, Giakoumakis’ profile and deadliness from short-range suggest he’d be a hit when used by Celtic. That is, if he does get around to signing for us.

It could mean outgoings. Whether Edouard stays at Celtic is a mystery unto itself. While the financial rewards of winning the league with his goals and qualifying for the Champions League outweighs a sale at this stage, it’s also about what the player wants and needs.

Leigh Griffiths, meanwhile, has been subject of his own set of rumours. It might be best, at this stage, to cut the former Scotland striker loose. Especially if Giakoumakis comes in to fill another spot in the squad.

Either way, expect plenty of noise before Wednesday’s transfer deadline.
