Celtic are showing transfer interest in defender Aleksandar Vukotic ahead of the summer transfer window, Belgian outlet Le Soir reports.
They say that the Waasland-Beveren regular is on his way out of the club after they were relegated from the Belgian top-flight this term.
Just like the Scottish Premiership, a truncated season has been called in the Pro League, with Beveren the unlucky side to drop down a division despite being just two points behind the second-bottom team.
Vukotic has three years left on his contract but is now attracting attention from top-six side Mechelen as well as Celtic, Le Soir states.
The outlet reckons we’re eyeing him up as a potential replacement for Kristoffer Ajer, who has been the subject of intense transfer speculation over the last few weeks and months.
It was reported last week by 90Min that a number of clubs in England and across Europe were keen on the Norwegian’s talents this summer.
Vukotic has made over 100 league appearances in the Belgian and Bosnian top-flights, having previously played for FK Krupa.
His physical attributes would make him stand-out in the Celtic side, measuring up at a mammoth 6ft 7in. That’s taller than any other outfield player at the Hoops currently and matches the frame of goalkeeper Fraser Forster (Transfermarkt).
That would apply well to the Scottish game, where burly forwards are more often than not the order of the day.
For me, losing Ajer this summer isn’t ideal but the fact we’re being linked with alternatives is a positive.
As long as the club plan ahead appropriately we have to trust their judgement in the transfer window after last summer’s success.
