Celtic are one of the teams who have joined the hunt to sign Middlesbrough youngster Calum Kavanagh, as reported by TheHerald.ie.
The outlet believes that a number of English Premier League sides are keen on making a move for the teenager, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle and Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City.
Celtic though have also identified the player, hoping to blood him through our own development and reserve sides like other signings from English football over the last 12 months such as Jeremie Frimpong, Luca Connell and Jonathan Afolabi.
Like the latter two, 16-year-old Kavanagh is also a Republic of Ireland youth international and is said by the report to be highly rated by Boro, who are keen on retaining his services.
He had apparently been knocking in the goals on a regular basis for their academy sides.
Clearly any signing of Kavanagh would be one for the future, rather than for the first-team and all of this is likely to be sorted out after all the drama regarding the ongoing football shutdown.
Still, the prospect of signing a young player apparently chased by some of the top teams in England is a promising one.
It seems to all be part of a bigger strategy of Nick Hammond’s and, hopefully, it pays off for us in the future.
