Report: Celtic interested in international Ligue 1 striker Bamba Dieng
Celtic are reportedly interested in outcast Marseille striker Bamba Dieng, who looks set for a move away from the Ligue 1 side this summer.
The 22-year-old has made 42 appearances for his current side, scoring nine goals and providing a further three assists during that time.
Dieng joined Marseille in 2020 after a successful first year as part of the Diambars first team, where he finished top scorer in his homeland, Senegal.
With the arrival of new Marseille coach Igor Tudor, the Senegalese internationalist is expected to leave this summer after a falling out with the former Udinese and Verona manager [L’Equipe].
Several English Premier League clubs have been linked with a move across the last six months, including Newcastle, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Brighton.
All of the above clubs have previously reportedly held ‘dialogue’ with either Dieng’s agent or Marseille as the frontman eyes up a move away [The Express].
According to reports from French media outlet Homme du Match, Celtic are now also interested in a potential move for the talented Ligue 1 striker.
Reports throughout the summer have suggested that Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou is interested in bringing a new attacking option to the club
Dieng appears to fit the bill for what the 56-year-old is looking for, as a striker who can also play in several different positions across the frontline.
Although this seems like an extremely exciting link towards the end of the summer window, it appears quite unlikely that Celtic would be looking to make a move.
The reason for this is because it was only a matter of months ago that Marseille were looking for a fee upwards of £10 million [The Express].
Of course, a number of factors may have changed since then, including Dieng’s recent fallout with his new manager at the Ligue 1 side.
However, with the striker’s contract running until the summer of 2024 at his current club, it seems highly likely they would be looking for a similar fee in the last month of the transfer window.
It would be great to see the club make a push to bring in a further huge addition to the squad, after the signings of Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers in the same summer.
But, making a move for a player who would break the club’s record fee just seems very unlikely to happen, with Ange Postecoglou looking to add the final few touches to his squad for the season ahead.
